Effective business goal setting is a smart way to ensure you accomplish exactly what you want from your craft business.

Setting business goals allows you to:

1. Feel a great sense of control
When you know what you want to accomplish, you'll have a much easier time figuring out how to get there. You'll be able to take control of your life and your business instead of floating through aimlessly and accepting whatever comes your way.

You'll know that decisions you make will lead you to the life and business that you want for yourself. You'll know which actions will lead you in the direction you want and which will not.

2. Stay focused
When you know where you are going you will be better able to stay focused. If you know exactly what you want from your business, you will manage time better and make faster progress because you won't get sidetracked by things that may look like opportunities, but don't really lead toward your business goals.

Setting business goals helps you to stay focused on your priorities and avoid letting the expectations or influence of others get in your way. Business goal setting makes it will be much easier to make good decisions. You'll simply ask yourself, "Does this action or opportunity bring me closer to my business goals?" The answer to that question will provide you with the solution to the choices you need to make.

3. Gain confidence
As you achieve your goals, you realize more and more that you do have the ability to accomplish what your want to accomplish. That can push you toward setting and achieving even more challenging goals.

You're less likely to minimize your accomplishments if you have written goals. You can see that you set out to do something and you did it. Instead of dismissing and accomplishment, once you realize that accomplishing your goal was really quite manageable, you'll celebrate that accomplishment and move on to achieving more.

4. Flexibility and the ability to respond to changing circumstances
Businesses that succeed often don't do so in their original form. Many successful businesses are vastly different from the original vision the owner had for the company.

Clear business goal setting lets you know where you ultimately want to go and why you want to build a business. This knowledge will allow you to change plans and be flexible if you find a better path to that destination. If you don't know where you're ultimately going, how will you know if certain choices and actions will get you there and be worth your time?
