Catchy Business Names

Business Name Ideas

When you're trying to brainstorm catchy business names, consider throwing a business name ideas party.

Invite your friends over to help you brainstorm business name ideas. Make it fun, provide refreshments, and keep the atmosphere light. You'll probably be surprised by the great ideas for small business names that your friends will come up with, and they may think of some great ideas that you would never have thought of on your own.

When your friends arrive, bring out your thesaurus, some notepads and some samples of your products so your friends have a good idea of the type of business you are launching. You may want to write all of the ideas on a big sheet of paper so everyone can see all of the ideas. Be able to describe to your friends what you want to convey to your customers and try to invite friends who would fit within the profile of your target customer.

When I named my jewelry business, I didn't throw a business name ideas party (unless you count the evening my husband and I shared a bottle of wine while we brainstormed ideas, hoping that the wine would give us some business name inspiration). I did, however, ask for input from a lot of friends. Those people who had suggestions that really fit well with the image I wanted to convey also fit within the demographic I was trying to reach. Also, I noticed a big difference in the types of names people liked depending upon their age range. So do ensure that at least a few of the people you invite to your brainstorming session fit within your target market.

When your friends start brainstorming business names, don't judge any of the suggestions right away. Remember, you are just brainstorming and want to come up with as many options as possible. If you start judging the names too quickly, people will be inhibited about making suggestions. If the name ideas seem way off-base to you, instead of critiquing a specific name, remind your friends of the type of image and message you'd like to convey to customers.

Toward the end of the evening, make a list of all of the catchy business names your friends have come up with, and ask people to vote on their favorite names. Ideally, you could print up a sheet with all of the business name ideas, and give a copy to each person. Ask them to give 3 points to their favorite name, 2 points to their second favorite and 1 point to their third choice. You can then tally up the votes and find the winning name. You might consider offering a prize (perhaps one of your items that you sell) for the winning name.

The voting is for fun, and to help you get a sense of the way people respond to your list of business name ideas. You are not obliged to chose this name; just be clear with your friends that you are going to take all of the names at the end of the night and think through each suggestion carefully. It is worth the time to go through the voting because you will get some great insight into people's thoughts on the names.

Be sure to follow up with your friends. Once you decide on a business name, be sure to contact your friends and let them know what your final choice was. They'll appreciate hearing about your decision.
