Tips on Time Management

These tips on time management will help you to work more effectively and efficiently.

You may have started your own home based craft business in order to enjoy more freedom, but sometimes entrepreneurs get to a point where they feel like more overwhelmed than when they worked a job for someone else.

That happens more times that not to business owners, and generally it is because you have not introduced some good time management strategies into your work schedule. When you are a business owner, you have to be able to prioritize. Part of that is learning how to separate your business from your home so that you can complete your family and home life tasks while you also take care of the needs of your craft business.

Here are some easy tips on time management to ease your frustrations:

1. Develop Good Time Habits
This means you need to set a schedule and stick to it. Wake up every day at the same time, determine the time that you will begin work on a daily basis and stay with that schedule. Keep track of how much time you are putting into your business.

2. Set Realistic Expectations
All of us have had times where we seem to get lost, buried under and get off track. So the key is to have realistic goals about what you can get done in a given time frame. Don't put yourself in a position where you will fail, especially as a new home based business owner, and don't be afraid to say "NO" to more work than you can handle.

3. Prioritize Every Day
There are a lot of situations when time is wasted running around trying to take care of things and meeting with people when an email or phone call would suffice. Write down what needs to be done on a daily basis and then, as it is completed, mark it off your list. Be sure to keep some flexibility, as when you own a business there are times when you will have to stop what you are doing in order to take care of something.

4. Set Goals
This point is different from the daily expectations that are listed above. Your goals may involve the monetary marker you would like to see your business meet in a specified time frame, or your goal could be seeing a particular bill paid in full. It is good to keep a desk calendar with your goals written down, and it is more helpful to have a lot of small goals instead of trying to make a single, huge goal that you may have a hard time meeting.

5. Determine What Your Time is Worth
There's an easy formula to determine what your time is worth. Take your total annual income and divide it by 2000. If you don't know what your annual income is yet because this is a new venture for you, then base it on realistic expectations for the type of work you do. After you have determined the value of your time, you'll be able to decide if some parts of your work can be outsourced to others.

The fact is that a person who is self-employed needs to keep and maintain a time schedule with even more diligence than people who have traditional jobs. Learning to focus on what it is you want to accomplish and following to-do list you will find that running your business is much easier and you have not just been spinning your wheels.
